What your job will be like:

Facilities Management & Logistics is responsible for performing or specifying performance of all Jefferson Lab facility maintenance, construction, security, property, and facility services.  As a Sustainability Engineer (Electrical), advance site sustainability goals through analysis and implementation of energy efficient systems, renewable energy sources, waste minimization strategies, and pollution reduction measures. Work with the Sustainability Program Lead and Mechanical Engineer (Energy Manager) on a multidisciplinary team. Focus on making the site more sustainable. Targeted areas include electrical systems and their controls, photovoltaic and energy storage systems, lighting improvements, electrical assessments, energy benchmarking, project commissioning, simulations, and system improvement trainings.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with facilities engineering staff in the implementation of condition assessments, functionality assessments, comprehensive energy and water evaluations, and annual reporting requirements as required by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007, Section 432 for TJNAF site designated “Covered Facilities” every four years with the objective of identifying and implementing energy and water conservation measures. 
  • Identify and propose energy conservation measures (ECMs) in existing facilities and new building and major renovations projects that align with DOE and Laboratory sustainability requirements as they apply to electrical systems, including but not limited to lighting improvements, renewable energy systems, distributed energy/utility systems, and plug-load reductions. Assist with life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) calculations and energy analysis reports and execute approved LCCA energy conservation measures (ECMs) consistent with Energy Act 2020 requirements.
  • Collaborate with facilities engineering staff to evaluate campus electrical loads, develop electrical load studies and incorporate sustainability, energy efficiency, and resiliency requirements into designs. This includes identifying and recommending product selections as they pertain to electrical systems, evaluating integration and interoperability of on-site renewable energy systems, implementing electrification of existing facilities, and assisting with the deployment of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) to support fleet and commuter on-site charging demands at new and existing facilities. Ensures compliance with Federal Carbon Pollution-Free Electricity (CFE) and decarbonization requirements by integrating sustainable design principles for energy efficiency and renewable energy systems.
  • Assist with leveraging diagnostic tools to generate dashboards, benchmarking, and metrics that assist in attaining optimal facility performance and achieve compliance with annual federal reporting requirements. Support demand response programs by identifying load-shedding opportunities and facilitating stakeholder involvement to maximize programmatic benefits.
  • Perform or provide oversight of commissioning of facility modifications and new construction with the objective of verifying compliance with applicable sustainability requirements. Develop or provide oversight of measurement and verification of facility modifications with the objective of confirming desired energy savings and system performance and compliance with sustainability requirements.
  • Lead or support TJNAF metering program, including performing metering maintenance, testing, and executing corrective actions. Daily monitor facility operations to provide building operational control center capabilities to facilities maintenance and operations staff. Leverages building automation, data analytic, fault diagnostic and detection, and other various software packages to execute work, reduce energy and use, and increase overall
    campus sustainability.


Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's in Engineering
  • 4 years of relevant experience


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Able to effectively train his/her work group and effectively lead work teams within the work group.
  • Able to give effective presentations to general audiences and write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for lab consumption.
