Job Summary

Engineering researches, plans, designs, tests, and develops products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, electrical systems, mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and energy use. Applies research to planning, developing, and testing mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. In this role you will be focused on design and validation of next generation electrical powertrain systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Analysis
    • Research and Support of New Technology initiatives involving next generation Power Electronics and Drivetrain design
    • Design of drivetrain solutions for next generation high speed applications
    • Develop and design mechanical components, systems, and machinery.
    • Analyze and evaluate designs for performance, safety, and efficiency.
    • Conduct simulations and modeling to predict and optimize system behavior.
  • Product Development
    • Sizing & Selection of VFDs for various AC motor types
    • Review of AC motor data sheets and design criteria
    • Design and selection of AC switch gear components for motor starter applications
    • Collaboration with suppliers on development of Inverter and Motor hardware for compressor applications
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new products from concept to production.
    • Select materials, manufacturing processes, and components for product assembly.
    • Create detailed engineering drawings and specifications.
    • Utilizes engineering principles in the product development process
  • Testing and Prototyping
    • Programming of VFDs with custom motors for compressor and fan motor applications
    • Support of Lab Prototype Build and Validation work of motor drivetrain assemblies
    • Develop and conduct experiments and tests to validate designs and prototypes.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues and challenges.
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
    • Identify opportunities for product and process improvements.
    • Implement cost-effective solutions to enhance performance.
  • Documentation and Reporting
    • Maintenance of production VFD configuration files for high value projects
    • Maintain accurate records, including design files, testing data, and reports.
    • Communicate project progress and findings through technical reports and presentations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 8-10+ years of experience in design and integration 3PH AC Motors and Variable Frequency Drives
  • 8-10+ years of experience with industrial rotating machinery

Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements

Ability and willingness to travel 10-15% (primarily domestic to Ingersoll Rand testing and manufacturing facilities).

Key Competencies

  • Familiarity with AC Inverter Topologies and control modes
  • Familiarity with Asynchronous and Synchronous motor types and control modes
  • Familiarity and Experience with Low Voltage Motor Stater Control and Switch Gear
  • Knowledge of motor assembly, winding techniques, and magnetic materials
  • Knowledge of electrical standards applicable in the Americas and major European countries (e.g., NFPA70, NFPA79, UL508, UL508A, UL508C, IEC61800-5-1, IEC61439-1/2, IEC60204, IEC60037, etc.)
  • Experience with Eplan, Creo, and Windchill design tools is a plus
